Golden Valley Wind Energy Facility is owned by BioTherm (60%), Thebe Investment Corporation (37.5%) and a local community trust (2.5%).

BioTherm is wholly owned by emerging markets investor Actis.

Project Description
Golden Valley is a 120 MW wind farm, comprising forty-eight 2.5 MW turbines, an on-site substation and 6.7 km of 132 kV overhead lines connecting to the Kopleegte substation.

The plant is expected to generate more than 477 GWh/y of renewable power.

The project was built by a team comprising 98% South Africans.

Planned Start/End Date
The Golden Valley Wind Farm was connected to South Africa’s electricity grid in December 2020.

Latest Developments
The Golden Valley Wind Farm has become the latest wind farm to be connected to the national grid.

All 48 wind turbine generators have been successfully commissioned.

Goldwind (engineering, procurement and construction contractor) and OptiPower (full electrical balance of plant, including the overhead power lines, substation, all reticulation works from the turbines to the substation, termination points and the commissioning of the plant).
