Global steel output up 6.3% y/y in August

Global crude steel production for the 67 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) increased by 6.3% year-on-year to 143.6-million tonnes in August.

China’s crude steel output increased by 8.7% year-on-year to 74.6-million tonnes, while India’s output increased by 4.1% year-on-year to 8.5-million tonnes. Japan’s crude steel production, however, decreased by 2% to 8.7-million tonnes.

Germany’s production increased by 3.3% year-on-year to 3.6-million tonnes, while France increased its output by 15.5% year-on-year to 1.1-million tonnes. Italy’s production increased by 0.4% year-on-year to 1.1-million tonnes, while Spain’s output decreased by 2.7% to 1.1-million tonnes.

The US produced 7.1-million tonnes of crude steel in August, an increase of 6.3% year-on-year.

Africa’s steel production increased by 20.9% year-on-year to 1.15-million tonnes. South Africa’s production increased by 24.4% year-on-year to 554 000 t and Egypt’s production by 23.6% to 535 000 t.

Meanwhile, worldsteel reported that the crude steel capacity utilisation ratio of the 67 countries was 72.2% in August – 3.3 percentage points higher than in August 2016 but 0.2 percentage points lower than in July.
