The Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) plans to unveil a new rating tool for interiors in response to market demand.

The Green Star SA – Interiors rating tool will assess the design, construction and refurbishments of interior spaces in both existing and new buildings, and extend to offices, retail stores, restaurants, hotels, galleries, public buildings and healthcare facilities.

GBCSA will implement the interior rating in a pilot format at the upcoming Green Building Council Convention, in Cape Town, on October 17.

“We are incredibly excited about this rating tool as it puts the decision to commit to environmental sustainability firmly in the tenants’ hands,” said GBCSA CEO Brian Wilkinson.

With the incoming rating tool, tenants candecide whether they wish to comply with green building standards within their own office spaces.

The project has been facilitated through sponsorship from Standard Bank and Saint-Gobain.

The GBCSA, with its green head office at the Blackriver Park complex, in Observatory, Cape Town, is aiming to become the first commercial office certified under the Green Star SA Interiors rating early in 2014.
