The election in Parliament of Cyril Ramaphosa as the fifth President of South Africa’s democratic era is an opportunity for a fresh start. Much will hinge, though, on his ability to convince business and labour to make the contributions and sacrifices needed to help realise his ‘New Deal’. To do so, a decisive shift in emphasis will be required – a shift from the party ‘unity’ stance that has prevailed since Ramaphosa’s election as African National Congress president in December to renewal and reform.
