The 1 000 m2 office extension for Pretoria West-based retail outlet Kit Kat Cash & Carry was officially completed last month, following modifications of the initial expansion in January.

Structural steel specialist Portal Frame Structures, a subsidiary of the Pro Roof Steel Mer-chants group of companies, was contracted to design, fabricate, erect and clad the steelwork for the R750 000 project.

Portal Frame Structures GM Louis Visser says the company was awarded the contract mid-December last year and com- pleted the structural steel fabrication a week later.

“We started erecting the steel framework in January and finished the extension in ten days. However, the customer wanted a few alterations done. We supplied 28 t of steel and an additional 18 t for the cladding. All the steelwork was manufactured in-house at our Pro Roof premises, in Vereeniging,” he explains.

Pro-Lok concealed fix sheeting, measuring 36 m each, was used for the roofing. It is a nonpierced roofing product that can be used in applications where the roof slope is less than 5°.

Pro-Lok can be manufactured in any length as it is rolled on site, simplifying the awkward transporting of long lengths.

The benefits of using the sheeting include a leak-free roof and faster installation, as it can be rolled directly onto the structure, as opposed to joining or lapping the sheeting.

Pro-Lok can also produce on-site curved bull-nosed sheets according to a customer’s specifications.

Meanwhile, Pro Roof is also supplying about 2 800 t of steel for a 32 000 m2 ferrochrome plant, in Rustenburg.

Visser says the project started about two years ago and is expected to be completed in the next 12 months.

He says the time lag is the result of the complexity of the equipment being installed.
