EnviroServ’s new landfill cell in Gqeberha in operation
A new landfill cell has been built at waste management company EnviroServ Waste Management’s hazardous waste facility at Aloes, in Gqeberha, at a time when many of the country’s municipal landfills are reaching capacity.
Construction of the cell started in November 2021 and was completed in September this year.
“Now that permission has been granted by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, we have started using the cell and the first load has arrived,” says Aloes operations manager Sue Alcock.
Community involvement was key in the development of the cell, with 30 unemployed people having been recruited from local communities to assist with labour.
“Further investment in the local community was [achieved] through small, medium-sized and microenterprises’ (SMMEs’) participation, with no less than six SMMEs benefitting directly during the construction,” Alcock says.
“The development of this new cell is exciting news for the many industries who rely on us for responsible waste management, and a great investment into the industrial sector,” she adds.
