Electrical solutions and lighting specialist organisation Magnet Group will exhibit at Power & Electricity World Africa (PEWA) on March 27 and 28 at the Sandton Convention Centre, in Gauteng.

Products that will be displayed include multichannel power analysers and monostable industrial relays, which cater for industries – such as automotive, food services and industrial – requiring automation and energy management products, says Magnet Johannesburg regional manager Stephen Rogerson.

“This prestigious event is a good forum to display and demonstrate Magnet’s solutions for industrial automation, energy, renewable energy and building automation to key players in the power and electricity sector.”

Magnet’s stand (C68) will feature the company’s range of relay and industrial control products from manufacturing company Carlo Gavazzi.

Magnet Carlo Gavazzi product manager Ian Carr comments that, after exhibiting at the event last year, Magnet gathered a fair number of leads and definitely sees the value in having a presence at the PEWA event, “so much so that we will create a more elaborate display than the standard shell scheme we had last year”.

Magnet has been distributing Carlo Gavazzi products since 2015 and offers a range of energy meters designed for easy installation and accuracy. Carr notes that this is beneficial, since metering is crucial for understanding energy use, which, in turn, “forms the basis in most energy management philosophies, especially with ever-increasing energy costs”.

Analysers and Relays
Carlo Gavazzi’s WM50 modular branch circuit analysers, designed for dependable operation in critical applications, such as data centres, food storage, industrial production and hospitals, will be on display.

The WM50 analysers efficiently measure and monitor main electrical variables and voltage, and current harmonic distortions in a three- or single-phase system for a maximum of 96 channels. This system can view total and partial active and reactive energy consumption; up to three water, gas and heat totalisers; and up to six energy consumption tariffs.

The analyser provides up to 16 alarms and can be integrated with accessory modules to expand its control and communication capacity. Main unit functions are increased with two modules, which include a digital input/output model, an analogue input module and a communication module.

An optional accessory module can manage three analogue inputs and six digital inputs/outputs while transmitting data to other systems. It can also log measurements and events.

Further, Carr points out that the WM50 analyser has been designed for quick configuration. “Detachable terminals connect to 12-channel current sensors with proprietary cables, and clips are supplied with sensors to ensure efficient operation at all times.”

He avers that the backlit light-emitting diode (LED) display clearly shows single and total load measurements, as well as configuration parameter values. Digital communication between current sensors and the WM50 device ensures disturbance immunity.

Moreover, Magnet’s stand at PEWA will also feature Carlo Gavazzi’s electromechanical relays, which are typically used to switch loads such as heaters, lights and industrial automation.

“Of particular interest are the relay midi industrial (RMI) and the relay control panel (RCP) monostable industrial relays that are used in control panels; in heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) control systems; for pump and compressor control; and in electronic and consumer products.”

These relays are sealed for protection to IP40 standards and comply to governing body the European Commission’s low-voltage directive principle. They are available in plug-in and printed circuit board mounting, with a 3 750 Vac dielectric coil to contacts. “They come standard with a push-to-test button, as well as a LED mechanical flag indicator,” Carr explains.

The compact RMI relays are designed for high switching power, with two or four changeover contacts. The two-pole version has a switching capacity of between
10 A and 12 A, and the four-pole version between 5 A to 6 A.

RCP relays, with two or three changeover contacts and an 8- or 11-pin socket mounting, offer an extended service life of a minimum of 100 000 electrical operations at 10 A.

Magnet’s portfolio of Carlo Gavazzi products also encompasses key energy management solutions, including energy meters, current transformers and energy efficiency monitoring solutions. Additionally, the company offers a virtual matching utility range of integrated Web server solutions.

These solutions are suitable for use in diverse industries, including agriculture, building and home automation, conventional and renewable energy, food and beverage plants, and HVAC systems. “The Web server solutions are also used in packaging and plastics machines, lifts and escalators.”

Magnet provides a technical and support service throughout Africa to ensure optimum performance of all components.
