In July 2021, about 40 000 South African businesses across the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng were rocked by violent protests and looting that left 72 people dead and scores of businesses in ruins, with many burned to the ground.

Power management solutions company Eaton understood the toll this had on the resources of a business and was determined to help its customers that were affected by the violence to quickly stabilise. This demonstrated not only the company’s commitment as a supportive and responsive partner, but also as a corporate citizen.

“Complete business restoration was a top priority and we helped some of South Africa’s largest retailers and corporations to identify, evaluate and redesign their power management systems,” states Eaton’s Services Manager for Africa Abel Martins.

“The team proactively assisted affected customers in the financial services, retail and ICT sectors by conducting free site inspections, audits on the extent of the damage, free needs analyses and quotes on products, aimed towards a speedy recapitalisation after the riots,” explains Martins.

Eaton’s services team offers a comprehensive portfolio of services tailored for every stage of a power system’s life cycle—whether it is design, build, or support. Eaton’s services integrate and optimise the elements of a power system to make sure it is aligned with business goals.

So, how can Eaton help your business? A reliable power distribution system is essential to the operation and profitability of any business facility. Unfortunately, repeated operation cycles, changing operating conditions and prolonged environmental exposure inevitably results in some degradation of switchgear components over time.

If left unchecked, this deterioration can lead to increasingly frequent failures, system downtime and production losses, not to mention rising operational expenses for maintenance and repair.

Eaton’s comprehensive portfolio of services and solutions are tailored to every stage of a power system’s lifecycle, ensuring maximised uptime and optimised performance throughout its entire lifespan.

Martins explains that product lifecycle management is the process of managing every stage of a product’s lifecycle, from its planning and design, through its installation, to ongoing maintenance and monitoring and finally, to its retirement and disposal.

“Effective product lifecycle maintenance ensures higher quality, greater safety and optimum efficiency throughout the power system’s lifetime,” he says.

“The product lifecycle management that our services team offers include installation and commissioning, warranty care and extension, maintenance with cyber secured monitoring, troubleshooting services and spare parts, equipment life extension and modernisation, and end of life services,” Martins concludes.
