The South Africa branch of German engineering company SEW Eurodrive is focused on producing energy efficient drives that can maximise the load and capacity of mills and refiners in the sugar industry.

“A key point in the sugar industry is its need for motors and gearing solutions to provide producers with efficient working times, but also to improve the energy use of a plant in terms of design and functionality,” SEW Eurodrive branch manager Jonathan McKey tells Engineering News.

He states that SEW Eurodrive provides gearing and motor solutions for sugar mills in South Africa, Mozambique and Swaziland and has reaffirmed its focus on tailoring its motor and gearing offerings to best suit sugar producers.

“While we predominantly supply geared motors and industrial gear solutions to multiple sugar mills across Southern Africa to increase capacity and sugar extraction, we also provide unique drive engineering solutions, as factories require varying options for sugar production.”

McKey adds that sugar producers have used one or more of the company’s solutions for many applications, including horizontal crystallisers, filters, clarifiers, conveyors, batch pans and mixers, as well as in the packaging department.

The broad use of SEW Eurodrive geared motors in the sugar industry has led the nationally based company to hone assembly and delivery times, as well as after-sales service.

“Our products, produced in Germany, are assembled in unique solutions, according to client requirements. Generally, sugar producers need a product with a short lead time, along with reliable availability and serviceability.”

With a sales, service and assembly plant in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, the company remains well stocked to complete most industrial gear, electronic and geared motor projects within exceptionally short delivery times.

McKey notes that, along with the substantial stock, SEW Eurodrive provides a comprehensive field service and support which remain cardinal to the operationally geared motor components.

“We have service teams that provide solutions for clients on site; we also offer service facilities at all our branches nationwide. SEW Eurodrive’s continued focus on offering a full suite of services, including presales, has allowed for good product growth in the sugar industry,” he concludes.
