The use of digital presses to print labels offers a number of benefits and a range of options. Digital printing is especially useful for printing multiple versions of a label and for personalised data printing.

Digital presses also offer flexibility in printing, for example if a version of label has to be changed at short notice, such as on-pack changes, promotional campaigns or seasonal changes.

Digital roll label converting encompasses digital labels, roll labels and label converting.

Digital labels

Digital labels are a type of pressure-sensitive label, printed using state-of-the-art digital printing presses.

The benefits of digital labels include:

  • Fast turnaround times thanks to quick set-up times
  • Attention-grabbing quality with photographic-like finishes
  • Short-runs and complete consistency between reprints
  • Cost saving in storage and waste
  • Design flexibility, with the option for implementing rapid changes on demand

Roll labels

Roll labels are supplied on a roll, which is a continuous strip of labels attached to a liner and wound around a core. Roll labels are particularly suited to customers who purchase labels in bulk and for manufacturers with longer run requirements. Label applicators are used to secure the labels to products.

Label converting

Label converting relates to the processes that takes place after a label is printed. The process focusses on the final look of the label.

Converting techniques include:

  • Die cutting: cutting labels into its design-specified shapes and sizes
  • Foiling: used to convey quality and visual and aesthetic appeal to promote on-shelf visibility

Pyrotec PackMedia specialises in on-pack product identification solutions and digital printing, offering a range of coding and labelling equipment and services. In 2019, the company acquired a Durst Tau 330 RSC eight-colour digital label press and an ABG Digicon Series 3 finishing machine which offers enhanced label printing capabilities, increased turnaround times and visually appealing, consistent print quality.
