Desert Bloom hydrogen project, Australia
Name of the Project
Desert Bloom hydrogen project.
Location
Tennant Creek, in the Northern Territory, Australia.
Project Owner/s
Aqua Aerem, a subsidiary of Sanguine Impact Investment, and Osaka Gas.
Project Description
The 10 GW project will comprise a series of modular and portable 2 MW hydrogen production units (HPUs) that generate water, heat, electricity and hydrogen. The project will consist of about 4 000 HPUs at its peak and produce about 410 000 t/y of green hydrogen for domestic and export use when at full scale.
The project will use breakthrough atmospheric water-capture technology, powered by off-grid solar, to produce commercial quantities of renewable hydrogen, with no impact on scarce local water resources or the environment. Each HPU will contain a photovoltaic system, a concentrated parabolic trough solar thermal heater, a water producing heater and an electrolyser.
Potential Job Creation
About 1 000 jobs are expected to be created and more than 120 full-time positions to operate and maintain the project.
Capital Expenditure
$10.75-billion.
Planned Start/End Date
Project development will start in 2022, with the project aiming to launch the commercial operation of a 400 t hydrogen plant in 2023.
Latest Developments
The project was granted major project status by the Northern Territory government in December 2021.
