For several years, many South Africans have expressed – often under the social media banner #DataMustFall – unhappiness with the prices being charged for data by the country’s mobile operators. Now the Competition Commission has added its considerable heft to the campaign, after its market inquiry confirmed that South African data prices are high by global and continental standards. Damningly, the inquiry found that the retail pricing structure of mobile data is antipoor and lacks transparency. Several recommendations have been made to ensure the introduction of lower prices, and stakeholders, including network operators, have been given until June 14 to make further submissions on the findings and recommendations.
