Crude steel output slumps globally in October
Global crude steel production decreased by 2.8% year-on-year in October to 151-million tonnes.
World Steel Association reported on Tuesday that China’s production was 0.6% lower year-on-year at 81.5-million tonnes, while India’s production was 3.4% lower year-on-year at 9.1-million tonnes.
Japan produced 8.2-million tonnes of crude steel in October, which was 4.9% lower than in October 2018.
South Korea also reported lower crude steel production of six-million tonnes, a decrease of 3.5% year-on-year.
Germany’s production was down 6.8% year-on-year in October to 3.3-million tonnes, while Italy produced 3.7% less steel year-on-year at 2.2-million tonnes.
France produced 1.2-million tonnes of crude steel in October, which was 10.6% lower than in October last year.
Spain’s production of 1.2-million tonnes was down by 7.6% year-on-year in October.
The US reported crude steel production of 7.4-million tonnes in October, which was 2% lower year-on-year.
Brazil produced 2.6-million tonnes, down 19.4% compared with October last year.
Turkey’s crude steel production was 2.7-million tonnes, which was 15% lower year-on-year.
Crude steel production in the Ukraine was 12.7% lower year-on-year at 1.6-million tonnes.
Africa’s steel production decreased by 16.6% year-on-year to 1.08-million tonnes, driven by a 7.6% year-on-year decrease in South Africa’s output to 502 000 t and a 29.4% year-on-year decrease in Egypt’s output to 515 000 t.
