The redevelopment of the old grain silos at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront into what is today the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa involved some quite innovative design, engineering and construction work. However, it also required specialised concrete, which was supplied and sponsored by Afrisam. The repurposing of the silos involved cutting away a portion and the addition of new structural elements. The museum, which was designed by renowned architect Thomas Heatherwick and opened in September, required highly technical formwork, which, in some cases, allowed for only a single pour in the absence of any vibration to remove voids and air pockets.
