Total technology solutions provider Tenova Mining & Minerals South Africa announced last month that it had been awarded a significant materials handling contract by coal miner Sasol Mining.

The contract, which entails the supply of a conveyor system, forms part of Sasol Mining’s Tweedraai expansion project in Secunda, Mpumalanga, which will result in part of the Syferfontein mine being replaced.

This is one of Sasol’s projects that are under way to ensure that the company has modern replacement operations to replace some of its long-standing, but depleting, mines.

The project entails the use of optimised steel structures and designs using advanced technologies, which have been developed in house over the past decade by Tenova Mining & Minerals South Africa’s trading division, Tenova Takraf Africa.

The new conveyor system to be established by Tenova Mining & Minerals includes the design and installation of three conveyors, totalling 3 km, which can convey coal at a design capacity of 4 800 t/h.

Electrical and instrumentation systems, bulk earthworks and civil foundations for the conveyor system and transfer towers also form part of the contract.

Tenova Mining & Minerals says the contract is the culmination of ongoing engagement between it and Sasol Mining.

“This award reinforces and continues our proud and long-standing relationship with Sasol Mining,” says Tenova Takraf Africa MD Riccardo Tonini, adding that the successful execution of the project will create a sound foundation on which Tenova Mining & Minerals can continue to build its relationship with Sasol Mining well into the future.
