Engineering solutions provider Bearing Man Group (BMG) has upgraded its Fenner range of shaft-mounted speed reducers (SMSRs), enabling the transmission of higher torque capacities.

“These upgraded SMSRs can transmit higher torque capacities, owing to the improved gear geometry and case designs for smaller sizes and lower weight-to-output torque ratios,” says BMG Fenner shaft mounts engi- neering specialist Dave Saville.

The unit, with a significantly improved taper grip, is fully interchangeable and resistant to fretting corrosion.

Saville notes that the new-generation reducers are available in 13 case sizes, achieving a maximum torque output of 44 051 Nm. The reducers are available in 5:1, 13:1 and 20:1 ratios, with a maximum output hub bore of 190 mm.

“These flexible SMSRs ensure a good power-to-weight ratio in compact dimensions,” says BMG Drives GM Mark Barbour, adding that another important feature of the application is the optional taper- grip locking system, which simplifies the installation and removal of the gearbox and enables the transmission of gear unit loads without the need for a key.

Saville says the SMSRs are mounted directly on the drive shaft instead of requiring foundations of their own, which eliminates the need for flexible couplings and external belt take-up arrangements.

A torque arm anchors the speed reducer and provides quick and easy adjustment of the wedge belt using a turnbuckle. This motor-mounted assembly accommodates different motor frame sizes and enables a full adjustment of drive centres.

“Therefore, a standard belt can be fitted and easily retensioned as required,” says Saville, who concludes that BMG also has a motor mount that automatically adjusts the belt tension.
