Company continues to provide world-class solutions
With the EMSS Group now rebranded as Alphawave since 2017, EMSS Antennas remains the antenna design and analysis subsidiary of this group since 2002.
Over the last decade the company has been integrally involved in both South Africa’s MeerKAT and the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio astronomy telescope projects. EMSS Antennas conceived and developed the cryogenic receiver systems and the associated vacuum and helium support services for MeerKAT in the UHF and L-bands. More recently, the MeerKAT L-brand product was refined to pre-production readiness for SKA.
In addition to these antenna systems, EMSS Antennas was also responsible for the electro-magnetic design and performance analyses of the shape of the offset Gregorian antenna reflecting surfaces for both the MeerKAT and SKA dishes.
The company is predominantly a research and development house, but for MeerKAT, it established a production facility to build the 140 receivers and both the helium- and vacuum-support subsystems. This facility was tailor-made for producing these highly specialised products and is aligned to do so once more for SKA. However, should the need arise, the facility can easily be transformed to produce similar limited-quantity, highly specialised products for similar projects.
EMSS Antennas maintains an established culture of quality management and product assurance due to the company’s long-term commitments to radio astronomy. The company’s production facility has been ISO 9001 certified since 2017.
The company's capabilities and facilities have been of use to the satellite industry cluster in the past. EMSS Antennas remains available to assist on component, subsystem or system level.
