A new modular energy storage solution using high-density lithium-ion batteries has recently been unveiled.

Atlas Copco asserts that its new ZenergiZe energy storage system offers optimum performance, significant fuel savings, reduced carbon dioxide emissions, zero noise and virtually no maintenance. The solution is designed to be mobile and modular, uses smart engineering technology, and is said to be 70% more compact and lighter, compared to traditional alternatives.

Battery energy storage systems or battery packs are used to capture and store energy for later use, for example to supply power to an off-grid application or to supplement a peak in demand. Atlas Copco explains that these energy storage systems cannot be used to replace grid power but can offer reliable, efficient short-term solutions where grid power is intermittent or where generators cannot be used. The systems are also often used to manage energy generated from intermittent sources, such as solar panels.

High-density lithium-ion batteries offer a number of benefits, including a 40 000-hour lifespan under normal operating conditions and an overload capability of up to 200%. The batteries are also said to be virtually maintenance-free and deliver a large usable energy range compared to other technologies. They are particularly suited for short cycles (charge and discharge) performance. In addition, the batteries can be used at high and low ambient temperatures of -15 °C to 50 °C.

The ZenergiZe system is designed with a focus on sustainable energy delivery and is able to provide over 12 hours of power with a single charge of one-and-a-half hours. It is available in two options, namely Island and Hybrid mode, offering a flexible choice to suit specific applications.

Island mode allows the energy storage system to be used as a standalone power solution and is suited for job sites where noise or pollution concerns prohibit the use of a generator. It is suited for night time operations and for remote telecom, rental, and varying or low load applications.

The Hybrid mode can be used with any diesel generator, offering smart load management by enabling end-users to better map load demand. The genset can be run under fixed load while charging the lithium-ion batteries, preparing them to take over when load varies. This hybrid mode solution is suitable for use in a range of applications including events and urban construction and can also be used for small tool operation.

The ZenergiZe units incorporate a number of connectivity features and benefits including a smart start-and-stop function, an Energy Management system, which includes battery management communication, a remote monitoring system, a Bluetooth mobile application and parking mode.
