Southern Africa sole distributor of Jacob Modular Tubing products Roff Industries will showcase the Jacob Quick Connect (JQC) clamp solution for grain-handling and food- processing applications at the Nampo, or National Maize Producers Organisation, Harvest Day.

Roff Industries bulk materials handling and spare sales manager Jan Jordaan notes that the JQC clamp is used to connect various modular pipework systems. He adds that one system might include the JQC or standard clamps, conductive and food-grade seals, pipe sections of up to 2 m, connection flanges and welding ends to link to other systems or components, as well as inspection and cleaning pipes for maintenance.

Jordaan points out that the modular systems and JQC solution aim to address the problems of the older pipe systems – the complexity of installations and the subsequent time wasted as a result, as well as the lengthy and labour-intensive maintenance and cleaning processes, which, in turn, lead to increased labour costs. Additionally, the older systems had high rates of product wastage and excessive dust, owing to inefficient sealing.

Thus, the new Jacob pipe system, when used in conjunction with the JQC clamp, reduces installation time, labour costs, downtime and the frequency with which parts have to be replaced, as only one person is needed to remove and reinstall a JQC clamp, compared with more persons required to replace a standard clamp.

Moreover, based on recent case studies and Roff’s experience in working with Jacob Tubing products, the JQC clamp more than halves the time spent on the installation of a pipe system.

Jordaan says that, as a result of the sound manufacturing and high-quality material, the life span of the JQC clamp is significantly longer, compared with standard versions, which are generally replaced after three maintenance sessions. “The clamps should outlast the lifetime of the processing machinery they are used in.”

He adds that, compared with other bulk handling systems, replacing components as a result of wear and tear is significantly reduced, owing to the durability of the Jacob system.

“The JQC clamp is available in diameters of between 60 mm and 400 mm and up to 1600 mm with a loose flange. “The material thickness can be up to 3 mm – thicker than most competing products. The entire pipe systems uses either powder-coated metal, food-grade stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanised steel.” He notes that high-wear-resistant linings are also available to limit damage to critical components.

Roff will also be showcasing its technologically advanced maize milling plants, which boast higher than industry average extraction rates, as well as its agroprocessing components, such as the hammer mill and crusher.

The Hammer Mill 100 is ideal for cutting hard grains and lucerne. The easy-to-install compact mill has a 5.5 kW either petrol or electric motor available. It has eight hammers mounted on two shafts that rotate independently, allowing for more effective operation and less wear. The machine weighs about 250 kg and is about 1 200 mm long, 900 mm wide, and 1 300 mm high. The hammer mill’s blades can be rotated in order to use all four cutting edges. There are multiple screen sizes, allowing differing product sizes. Both the blades and screens are easily replaced.

The Crusher 150 is used to create homogeneous feed size. It has two rollers powered by a 380 V motor. The rollers – 150 mm × 190 mm – are adjustable, durable and can be sharpened when blunt. The machine weighs about 300 kg. It is 1 200 mm long, 1 000 mm wide and 1 300 mm high. It has low power consumption, as well as low dust and noise levels.

The locally manufactured agroprocessing equipment is best suited to small dairies, piggeries, livestock farms and ranches – and various models cater to various needs in the market – from small operations to large feed producers.

Jordaan notes that Roff’s recent design change on its flagship R70 maize mill now yields a 2% to 3% higher extraction rate, ensuring that the client beats higher prices, as the higher extraction ensures that they have more end product to sell. “The current economic situation also [results in] a high demand for affordable food, and maize meal will always be the staple food in South Africa.”

The R70, together with Roff’s other value-adding products, ensures that Roff is able to provide clients with a competitive advantage in the depressed market.

Roff’s products help alleviate the effects of the drought by allowing farmers to produce their own animal feed. Roff has also loaned a hammermill to farming equipment supplier Suidwes Corporation to produce animal feed at a very low cost to farmers in need.

Roff Industries has supported the Nampo Harvest Day event since 1992, and will be exhibiting at stand 65A.
