Vehicle tracking and recovery systems provider Cartrack has introduced a telematic device aimed at improving the safety of drivers and passengers of taxicabs.

The Cartrack software will enable taxi operators to receive a far more accurate report of driver behaviour as opposed to relying on the data from their drivers’ smartphones.

In addition, the technology enables taxi operators to positively identify that the vehicle being used by the taxi driver is actually the registered vehicle.

Taxi operators in South Africa will have the ability to track vehicles, improving passenger safety and reducing personal liability for taxi drivers.

The company is now seeking to introduce the product internationally, having surmounted local challenges, such as a rugged and unregulated operating environment. It is already noticing good uptake of its products by international taxi industry players.

“We are noticing that this is an increasing opportunity in many of the regions in which we operate, in particular Singapore and within Europe,” Cartrack CEO Zak Calisto said, adding that the company currently had over 550 000 subscribers, with over 40 000 taxis subscribing to its fleet management service.

“Reliable telematics technology is quickly becoming an important and inexpensive management tool for both companies and individuals and it is a key element for improving passenger safety and security.

“Our software also provides vehicle owners with automatic reminders for routine services and licence or permit renewals, while giving granular data on how well or badly drivers treat their vehicles. The availability of all this business intelligence enables taxi operators to optimise the functioning of their taxi fleets,” he added.
