Name of the Project
Breidbach and Belstone interchanges upgrade.

Location
King William’s Town, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral).

Project Description
Sanral plans to upgrade the Breidbach and Belstone interchanges, which will ease mobility between East London and King William’s Town, and improve pedestrian and motorists’ safety.

The existing intersection on the Breidbach interchange requires upgrading, owing to the high number of road accidents when vehicles cross or merge with the busy N2. Currently, this intersection carries a large portion of traffic travelling to and from Bhisho, Breidbach, Zwelitsha and East London. The upgrade of the Belstone interchange will result in increased and free-flowing traffic between East London and Bhisho. Although the interchange has been designed as a full clover interchange, only two loops and off-ramps will be built in the interim. The other two loops will be built as traffic volumes increase over the years.

Potential Job Creation
The project will create an estimated 200 job opportunities for the local community.

Capital Expenditure
R430-million.

Planned Start/End Date
Construction is expected to take 30 months to complete.

Latest Developments
The project is currently in its mobilisation period before construction begins in early 2022.

During the mobilisation period, the contractor will interact with the community through the Project Liaison Committee and establish contract participation goals.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
None stated.
