Brazilian aerospace major reports strong delivery growth during the third quarter

Brazil-based global major aerospace group Embraer has reported on its deliveries for the third quarter of this year (3Q23) and total deliveries for the first nine months of this year. For the second quarter in a row, the company recorded double-digit year-on-year (y-o-y) increases in its civil (commercial and business, but excluding agricultural) aircraft deliveries.

Total commercial and business jet deliveries in 3Q23 numbered 43, a y-o-y increase of 30% (33 such aircraft were delivered in 3Q22). In 2Q23, deliveries had been 47% higher, y-o-y. Of the jets delivered during 3Q23, 15 had been commercial (that is, airliners) and 28 had been business jets. The figure for the airliners represented a 50% jump, y-o-y, while the number for the business jets was 22% higher than in 3Q22.

The commercial aircraft delivered last quarter were composed of six E175s (the last of the group’s original E-Jet family, of small single-aisle airliners, still in production, capable of carrying up to 88 passengers) and nine E195-E2s (the biggest of the next-generation E-Jet E2 family, and the biggest airliner in the company’s range, with a capacity of up to 146 passengers). Business aircraft deliveries were divided into 19 light and nine midsize jets. The light jets were further subdivided into two Phenom 100s (the smallest in Embraer’s range) and 17 Phenom 300s. The midsize jets were split into four Praetor 500s and five Praetor 600s.

In terms of the first nine months of this year, total commercial and business jet deliveries came to 105, a 33% increase, y-o-y. Of these, 39 were airliners and 66 were business jets. The airliner deliveries were again composed of E175s (numbering 18) and E195-E2s (21). The Phenom and Praetor families are now the only dedicated business jets produced by Embraer, with 44 of the former and 22 of the latter delivered during the first nine months. The Phenom deliveries were subdivided into five Phenom 100s and 39 Phenom 300s. The Praetors were subdivided into ten 500s and 12 600s.

Commercial aircraft orders booked, but not necessarily announced, during the third quarter, amounted to 28 E175s and ten E195-E2s (plus five options for the latter, one of which could be converted into an option for a smaller E190-E2). These orders came from four carriers on three continents (Africa, Europe and North America).

At the end of 3Q23, the company’s total order backlog stood at $17.8-billion, which was $500-million greater than at the end of 2Q23. For the commercial aircraft segment, the order backlog at the end of 3Q23 was $8.6-billion, which was $600-million higher than at the end of the previous quarter. The business jet backlog at the end of the third quarter was $4.3-billion. The group’s Services & Support business had a backlog valued at $2.8-billion.

Embraer is also active in the defence, space, security and agricultural aviation sectors. The third quarter saw the first delivery of one of the company’s new generation KC-390 medium multirole airlifter and tanker aircraft to the type’s first export customer, the Portuguese Air Force.
