Ekurhuleni-based Bitcon Industries is a designer, manufacturer, supplier and, where applicable, installer of various specialised doors.

The 60-employee company, which has been in operation since 1967, initially specialised in the manufacture of door and window frames. It entered the door manufacturing market in 1975, sub- sequently expanding its product range to include security doors, lead-lined doors for areas exposed to radiation and transformer room doors.

The company, which became a subsidiary of Vitrex in 1998, operates from a 2 000 m2 factory at its premises at 9 Jansen road, in Jet Park, near Kempton Park. The main equipment in the factory includes metalwork equipment for fabrication (punching and bending), welding facilities, painting facilities, a specialised batching plant for the preparation of the proprietary Rubidor fire-door cores, a lamination line and an assembly section.

Design and drawing facilities in the offices on the same premises provide the relevant technical assistance.

Bitcon is an ISO 9001-certified company and is working towards ISO 14001 and ISO 18001 certification.

The main input materials used are steel, various minerals used in the preparation of the fire-door cores, veneers and timber edging, and ironmongery.

Bitcon’s major customers in the recent past included elec- tricity utility Eskom’s Kusile and Medupi power stations; banking group Absa’s Project X, in Pretoria; Netcare hospitals countrywide; the new Alexander Forbes head office, in Sandton; and the Rosebank Mall.
