Australia’s national science agency Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) has launched a $2.5-million green hydrogen refuelling station at CSIRO’s Clayton site, in Victoria.

Together with Swinburne University of Technology, CSIRO will use the Victorian Hydrogen Hub to test hydrogen technology and train technicians on the use of hydrogen stations.

The facility can produce up to 20 kg of green hydrogen a day through renewable power and electrolysis. It has a storage capacity of 80 kg, which is enough fuel for 10 hydrogen-powered cars.

CSIRO explains it takes an average six minutes for a car to refuel and it can travel more than 600 km on a full tank.

The facility will serve to demonstrate hydrogen’s effectiveness for transport and test emerging hydrogen technologies.

These efforts align with Australia’s goal to be globally competitive in the hydrogen space, as well as CSIRO’s own Hydrogen Industry Mission to develop a commercially viable industry and supply chain.
