Astrapak tallies damages to factory after fire
Packaging producer Astrapak on Wednesday initiated emergency supply strategy planning, in collaboration with affected clients and suppliers, after a fire at its East Rand plastics operation impacted output on some production units.
The Brakpan-based facility produces plastic film and bags for a variety of products and markets.
An investigation is currently under way to determine the cause of the fire late on Tuesday that “severely” affected the production of the company’s recycling speciality films and primary printing units.
In a statement to shareholders, Astrapak said it planned to lean on its Cape Town and Durban factories, as well as bring on-line a mothballed Johannesburg-based operation, to minimise supply disruptions.
The film extrusion and bag-making units - which Astrapak noted were core to the group - along with the secondary printing unit, were not impacted and continued operations.
No injuries were reported. The extent of the damage to the factory was still being assessed.
