ANC denies it benefited from PRASA deal
The African National Congress (ANC) has rejected allegations that the party had been implicated in alleged bribery by a supplier of locomotives to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA).
News24 on Friday morning reported that PRASA chairperson Popo Molefe had filed new court papers in an ongoing bid to overturn a contract awarded to Swifambo Rail Leasing in 2012.
In his sworn affidavit, Molefe alleges that Swifambo paid R80-million to "entities who were not creditors" of the company after an Angolan businessperson had told Swifambo's CEO, Auswell Mashaba, that 10% of the tender's value had to be paid to the ANC.
"The African National Congress rejects allegations contained in a News24 article…implicating the organisation in bribery and corruption," the party said in a statement issued by spokesperson Zizi Kodwa.
"The ANC has not received any such funds from the companies concerned and condemns in the harshest possible terms rumour-mongering and the use of the name of the organisation between individuals in their personal deals with no mandate from the party," reads the statement.
"The ANC appreciates that the matter is before the courts and will attentively watch the outcomes of this process. We reserve our rights to take action against those who impugn the reputation and integrity of the African National Congress," concluded Kodwa.
