The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) has lost its recognition status at Samancor Western Chrome mines outside Mooinooi in North West, the company said.

"We confirm that Amcu was de-recognised as of from 1 July 2014 as their membership fell to under the threshold limits for group recognition," said spokesperson Sunel Pretorius.

She said the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and trade union Uasa were recognised unions at the Western chrome mines.

Amcu dethroned NUM as a dominant union in the platinum belt in 2012.

The union would forfeit its rights, such as having shop stewards and holding mass meeting at the company.

Amcu national office bearers were not immediately available for comment.

However, North West regional organiser Zolisa Bodlani said he was not aware about their derecognition at Samancor.

"I am not aware of it. As such I cannot comment," he said.
