South African private-sector airline Airlink has announced that it will start a new direct route between Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, from October 21. The new service will be operated three times a week and tickets are already on sale.

“The South Africa-Angola corridor has been underserved given its crucial commercial and economic importance,” pointed out Airlink CEO and MD Rodger Foster. “By establishing this service, Airlink is providing customers with more affordable competitive choices on the route. This will benefit businesses and stimulate commercial activity between the two cities and countries. In doing so, we will be able to promote travel, air cargo and tourism, all of which are vital to re-energise economies as we emerge from the pandemic crisis.”

The service will be operated with modern 98-seat Embraer E-190 jet airliners. The inaugural flight from Johannesburg to Luanda will be coded 4Z 042 and will leave Johannesburg at 09:40 on October 21, arriving in Luanda at 12:25. The inaugural return flight will be coded 4Z 193 and will leave Luanda at 16:35 that same day, arriving in Johannesburg that night at 21:10. However, with effect from October 24, the flights from Johannesburg to Luanda will be coded 4Z 044 and depart at 09:40 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, reaching Luanda at 12:25. The return flights will be coded 4Z 045 and depart the Angolan capital at 13:25 those same three days, arriving in Johannesburg at 18:00.

Meanwhile, domestically, Airlink has also announced that it would resume flights between Johannesburg and Polokwane, in Limpopo province. Services to Polokwane had to be suspended earlier this year when the South African Civil Aviation Authority determined that the airport’s emergency services capabilities did not meet regulatory requirements. These capabilities have now been upgraded.

“The Johannesburg-Polokwane route is important for business travellers and plays a crucial role in supporting Limpopo’s economy,” he highlighted. “We are looking forward to resuming our regular flights, which we will serve [sic] up to three times a day.”

The Polokwane route will be re-inaugurated on October 18 and operated by the airline’s Embraer ERJ regional jets. There will be morning and afternoon flights, both ways. The morning flights from Johannesburg will be coded 4Z 801 and leave at 06:35, arriving in Polokwane at 07:30. The return flights will be coded 4Z 802 and depart Polokwane at 07:55, reaching Johannesburg at 08:50. These flights will be operated on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The afternoon flights from Johannesburg will have the code 4Z 815, leave at 16:35 and arrive at Polokwane at 17:30, with the return flights being coded 4Z 816, departing at 18:00 and reaching Johannesburg at 18:55. These afternoon flights will be operated six days a week, the exception being Saturday. A Saturday service will be started on October 23, with flight 4Z 813 leaving Johannesburg at 10:30 and arriving in Polokwane at 11:25. The return flight, 4Z 814, will depart Polokwane at 11:55 and reach Johannesburg at 12:50.
