German conglomerate company and silver sponsor at this year’s African Utility Week Siemens, and business analytics company and gold sponsor at the event SAP have signed a global reseller agreement through which SAP will globally resell Siemens’ market-leading meter data management solutions, EnergyIP.

This cooperative effort is intended to address multiple digital end-to-end business scenarios for energy and utility clients globally.

The solution will be available directly from SAP, simplifying purchase and support processes for customers.

It will be marketed under the name SAP Meter Data Management by Siemens and is expected to be generally available during the second quarter of 2017.

As part of the agreement, SAP and Siemens also plan to further align development road maps in an effort to provide the foundation for next-generation business models supporting all future energy market players.

Emerging business models focus on delivering reliable and efficient power, while transitioning to an increasingly distributed energy landscape.

SAP and Siemens plan to help utility customers integrate real-time processing of Big Data generated by millions of connected meters and sensors to provide better insight and control for all energy producers and consumers, from large-scale power plants to microgrids.

“Siemens and SAP have long-standing relationships with utilities and municipalities. Our smart grid application platform, EnergyIP, combined with SAP for utilities solutions, will reach nearly half of all power utilities globally and bring our customers a high level of intelligence and insight to make data not only valuable but also actionable in today’s information-driven world,” says Siemens digital grid business unit CEO Thomas Zimmermann.

He adds that end-to-end digital business scenarios will be the key drivers to really change the current energy system.

He also says SAP views the announcement as a unique opportunity for its customers to leverage the know-how and the solutions of SAP and Siemens for information technology/operational technology integration, says SAP utilities business unit global VP Henry Bailey.

“Real-time access to device and meter data, combined with customer and commercial data, will help provide utilities with a comprehensive view of their customers and technical devices. We anticipate that this will change the landscape in which utilities will operate in the future,” he says.

Transforming the African Energy Landscape
Siemens has also entered into a local manufacturing agreement with industrialist company Electro Inductive Industries (EII), a Cape Town based Level 2 black economic- empowerment company that specialises in the manufacturing of transformers.

Through this partnership, EII will benefit from internationally recognised skills and knowledge transfer, while Siemens will benefit from having its own branded transformers that are mainly locally manufactured and South Africa will benefit from job creation.

The local transformer manufacturing industry will benefit significantly from this investment in bringing manufacturing technology and skill sets to South Africa, while the entire supply chain will also benefit from Siemens’ experience in global procurement and local subsupplier development.

South Africa’s electrical manufacturing industry is set to experience measurable future growth after Siemens announced its investment in a local manufacturer of medium power transformers serving utilities, industries and municipalities.

The investment will create jobs and bring new technology capability to South African industry.

The new transformer partnership is a major milestone in the localisation of Siemens medium-power transformer assembly, which forms part of government’s ongoing multibillion-rand Black Industrialists Programme, one focus of which is the localisation of electrical products such as transformers.

The manufacturing facility is currently being developed and upgraded in Cape Town to cater for a new line of Siemens transformers as part of its growth and job creation strategy.

The company will introduce its new transformer technology by training the local manufacturer, leading to a measurable advancement of the industry and its workforce.

“Siemens experts will begin training EII staff on the new technology, equipment and quality, thereby equipping them with a new set of internationally recognised assembly skills and expertise,” says Siemens Southern and Eastern Africa head of transformers and high-voltage products Ronnie Naidoo.

Downstream benefits of this localisation project will be felt across the entire supply chain through Siemens’ global procurement and enterprise development programme.

It incorporates global good governance, compliance and ethical business mentoring.

“Siemens is in Africa for Africa. This new partnership is of immense importance in helping South Africa achieve its market growth, with benefits to society as a whole, such as an increase in job creation. It also helps Siemens to expand its local portfolio,” concludes Naidoo.
