The project entails the enlargement of the existing primary treatment plant from 1.2-million cubic metres a day to 1.6-million cubic metres a day and the addition of a biological treatment plant.

Once completed, the plant will serve six-million people, making it one of the largest in the world.

A 50:50 joint venture between Orascom Construction and FCC Aqualia has signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to build the wastewater treatment plant.
