The Southern African Transport Conference (SATC) will for the thirty-eighth time host internationally-lauded plenary speakers and welcome around 700 transport professionals, academics, students and engineers.

The premier transport conference will be held at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research from July 8 to 11, with a keynote address by newly appointed Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula. The Minister's address will be live streamed from 08:30 on July 8.

Other planned speakers include Gauteng provincial government head of department Makhuku Mampuru and Department of Transport (DoT) acting director-general Dr Chris Hlabisa, as well as former Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Dr Ismail Vadi and his successor Jacob Mamabolo.

Following the Minister’s speech, the conference will be split into four parallel sessions, dealing with transport infrastructure, treasury matters, capacity building, transport for rural development and rail.

Additionally, the SATC organisers said in a release this week that there would be plenary sessions by local and international experts in road construction, transport engineering, autonomous vehicles and the maritime industry across the three days of the conference.

Besides the presentation of research papers, SATC also serves as a forum to debate current transport-related issues at national, provincial and municipal levels. The conference is co-sponsored by the Transport Research Board and endorsed by the DoT and the International Road Federation.
