Tim Raaff will take up his position as the newly appointed MD on June 1, 2008.
Raaff holds an engineering diploma from the former Wits Technikon and an executive development programme certification from the University of the Witwatersrand. He was previously MD at the South African branch of diversified engineering company Andritz, and prior to that, Raaff was MD at diversified engineering company Baker Hughes.
Raaff has been working in the industry for the past 35 years and has experience in the South African mining, general and process engineering sectors.
Raaff takes over from Michael Campbell who has been the MD of Sassda for the past two years.
Commenting on the time spent at Sassda, Campbell says that he is happy to have achieved a great deal with the association.
"Sassda had a very strong technical advisory arm when I arrived, but there was a need to increase the marketing efforts of the company, the main thing that I wanted to achieve during my time at Sassda was to change the focus of the association to make it a marketing tool for stainless steel and stainless steel companies, I feel that Sassda has come a long way in achieving this," says Campbell.
Raaff agrees with this sentiment and adds that the level of international promotion that Sassda has given stainless steel as well as companies within the industry is admirable. He says that Sassda has also made a significant contribution to the industry in the form of developing training initiatives.
Campbell will be taking up a position as group investor relations manager for petrochemicals company Sasol.
