Projects of Royal HaskoningDHV came out triumphant once again at the South African Institution of Civil Engineering & South African Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors (SAFCEC) Annual National Awards held at Emperor’s Palace on the 13th October, winning 4 awards in the Technical Excellence, Water Engineering and Community based Projects categories.
In the category for Technical Excellence the Ashley Drive Break Pressure Tank project for eThekwini Department of Water & Sanitation received a commendation while the Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme for Eskom was announced as the overall winner. The Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme was also the winner in the Water Engineering Division category. The Hlambanyathi Development Project for the Department of Transport received a Commendation in the Community based projects category.
The SAICE & SAFCEC Awards are held annually to honour individuals, projects, community-oriented initiatives as well as various institutional departments of SAICE and SAFCEC. The annual awards function gives these companies, individuals and departments a unique opportunity to showcase their deserving projects and work to the Civil Engineering industry.
The objective of the prestigious SAICE-SAFCEC awards is to give recognition to well-engineered civil projects, to portray the art and science of civil engineering to the general public and to publicise how the profession finds answers to challenging problems.
Hlambanyathi Development Project for the Department of Transport
The Hlambanyathi Development Project for the Department of Transport was undertaken in a joint venture between Royal HaskoningDHV and an emerging consultant – Mzansi Africa. There are few projects where the safety and prosperity of the rural communities of KwaZulu-Natal have been as comprehensively improved with an associated transfer of a variety of skills to local residents as with this impressive project.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport (DoT) has a vision and mission ‘to strive to provide the public with mobility through an affordable transportation system that is safe, integrated, regulated and accessible, to meet the development needs of our province’. With the Hlambanyathi Development Project the Department achieved this goal.
Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme for Eskom
The Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme is a multi-billion-rand project located about 45km north east of Van Reenen in the Little Drakensberg and has a generating capacity of 1332MW. Royal HaskoningDHV, as part of the Braamhoek Consultants Joint Venture with Knight Piesold and Gibb, were responsible for the design and construction supervision of the project. The development of Ingula is a true example of how infrastructure development and nature can work together to enhance economic growth to everyone’s benefit. The environment significantly influenced the project’s design and execution to create a ‘sense of place’.
The project which started with feasibility studies in the 1980’s required numerous detailed studies, extensive planning, expert knowledge, state of the art designs, professional project management, dedicated personnel, careful execution, strict quality control and unusual construction methods to finally reach the ultimate goal of generating power for the country. Ingula counts among the biggest of its kind in the world; created a large number of temporary and permanent jobs and the future benefits of the scheme to the country are countless. Truly a landmark all South Africans can be proud of!
Ashley Drive Break Pressure Tank for the eThekwini Department of Water & Sanitation
Royal HaskoningDHV, in joint venture with Knight Piesold and Naidu Consulting, designed and supervised the construction of the 20 Mℓ Ashley Drive Break Pressure Tank (BPT) To handle the varying inlet pressure and flow conditions at the BPT, a complex inlet structure was required to mitigate transient pressures and inlet valve cavitation.
The accommodation of the full range of design and operating conditions at the Ashley Drive BPT was a challenging prospect and the final solution with a bespoke inlet control structure met all the Client’s requirements for what is their largest and most strategic aqueduct built to date.
