The development officially begins with phase one of a R19-million project for the establishment of taxi ranks, ablution facilities and taxi offices.
Taxiprop CEO Kevin Williams explains that the phase-one deve-lopment will comprise a large user-friendly taxi-rank, to be used as an important intermodal facility for people from areas such as Carletonville, Westonaria and Toekomsrus.
The venture is a public–private partnership between Gautrans, Taxi-prop Development, the South African Commuter Corporation, Metrorail, and district and local municipalities in the area.
Phase 2 of the project will incorporate retail facilities both formal and informal, motor industry related services, bank- ing facilities, medical facilities, legal aid offices and education facilities. The project forms part Taxiprop and the South African National Taxi Council’s R2,5-billion ten-year programme to transform existing taxi and bus ranks to become retail and vehicle centre hubs.
