The tendering process for one of Gauteng’s largest health care public private partnership (PPP) projects, the R7-billion revitalisation of the Chris Hani Baragwanath (CHB) hospital would open in December.

The Gauteng provincial government said on Monday the process represented a commitment to leverage funding from the private sector to deliver quality healthcare services to the public.

Gauteng Finance MEC Mandla Nkomfe added that the project was necessitated by the hospital’s ageing facilities, and that the frequency of maintenance led to a large increase in running costs.

“Government alone cannot address the infrastructure backlog in the province, which has led us to explore alternative sources of funding. As such there are many projects that will be designed as PPPs in areas of eco-tourism, sanitation and solid waste treatment,” he added.

The CHB Academic Hospital revitalisation project is a PPP with the National Treasury, in which the private sector will design, partly finance and build the new hospital, as well as maintain the facility for the duration of the concession period.

The project involves the construction of a new hospital building at the Lilian Ngoyi site, situated in the same vicinity as the existing hospital.

Meanwhile, the tendering process for a City of Johannesburg’s waste-to-energy project, valued at between R6-billion and R10-billion, opens in November.

The project aims to reduce waste-to-landfill by between 60% to 80%, which requires the diversion of 500 000 t of waste from landfill sites out of about 1.6-million tons.
