The company specialises in high-quality low-volume production of lightweight sheet-metal fabrications in mild steel, stainless steel, 3CR12 and aluminium.
It has been active in metal fabrication for the last 15 years and the facility was originally established to support the electronics division which, at the time, was small and it was almost impossible to find subcontractors to manufacture low volumes on time at a quality acceptable to the export market. Quality has always been important, as the products and components it manufactures are exported to its Belgian partners, who ultimately deliver to most Nato armies, the British Ministry of Defence and the Swiss civil defence. Local customers benefit from its stringent quality policy in the jobbing department, believes director Mervyn Stocks.
As is the case with most exporting companies, profits are now under pressure with the strong rand. This problem is compounded by the rising local steel and labour price. However, the firm is in the fortunate position of being diversified, says Stocks.
It has divisions specialising in sophisticated power electronic components, mobile portable and emergency lighting equipment, and portable mast systems for the mobile telecommunications industry, he elaborates.
