Domestic and international courier company Aerospeed Couriers coowner Michael Gillman is concerned about the new tolling system and its effects on the industry, as courier companies will be forced to increase their fees to accommodate toll payments.
Users of toll roads, which are expected to be implemented in 2011, will be charged from 50c/km. Transportation of goods is a large component of the courier and freight services industry, and the new toll roads will create an additional expense for courier companies.
“We can expect courier companies to increase their prices, which will affect customers and could negatively affect the industry, as there could be a decrease in the amount of parcels sent through courier companies,” says Gillman.
Other developments that will impact on the industry are the changes required by the Civil Aviation Act, No 13 of 2009, which will bring it in line with international standards, says Gillman. The changes will require courier companies to enforce stringent security controls and label parcels as known or unknown. If parcels are unknown, they may be subject to screening. Other changes require that passenger commercial air transport does not carry unknown cargo and that parcels need to be confirmed or accounted for by a regulated agent.
This will require companies, such as Aerospeed, to know what each parcel contains. However, the changes to the Aviation Act will not directly affect Aero-speed. “We have a good personal relationship with our customers, and the company aims to be more aware of the contents of each parcel,” says Gillman.
Aerospeed does not personally courier packages, but acts as a travel agent for a customer’s packages and locates the most suitable company to courier a package, depending on the needs of the customer. The company also tracks packages and sends notifications when the parcel has been delivered.
“We eliminate the stress of sending a package and customers can also watch their tracked parcel online to monitor its progress,” explains Gillman. The most common users of this service are companies which deal with urgent packages, such as law and accounting firms, industrial factories (samples), the agriculture industry and hospitals or doctors (medicine).
