Given increased electrification and software content, as well as expanded system networking in hydraulic components and systems, cybersecurity has become an integral part of modern product development, notes hydraulics solutions specialist Weber-Hydraulik.

The company points out that the standard developed by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and SAE International, ISO/SAE 21434, defines requirements for the development of safe electrical and electronic systems in the automotive environment, stipulating a risk-based approach in which potential threats are identified early on, assessed and integrated into development processes.

Aligned with this certification, Weber-Hydraulik ensures that corresponding processes are established company-wide, including standardised risk analysis, clearly defined roles and responsibilities, and consistent documentation and verification mechanisms.

“For us, cybersecurity is an integral part of product development. The certification confirms our commitment to developing systems that are not only functional and high-performing, but also holistically secure and in the best interests of our customers and their applications,” Weber-Hydraulik cybersecurity competence centre functional safety and product head Maher Sahil emphasises.

Cybersecurity Requirements

In key industries, cybersecurity requirements are continuously increasing, with drivers including growing connectivity and a rising proportion of software and regulatory requirements, such as the UN Economic Commission for Europe’s regulations R155 and R156.

For original-equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and system integrators, this means that systems must not only be functionally safe but also protected against cyberattacks.

The ISO/SAE 21434 certification helps implement these requirements in complete vehicles, while for customers, the certification provides transparency and planning certainty, confirming that cybersecurity is systematically addressed throughout the entire product life-cycle.

Development Partner

With the ISO/SAE 21434 certification, Weber-Hydraulik strengthens its position as a development partner for safety-critical systems in an increasingly regulated market environment.

Additionally, with this certification, Sahil states, Weber-Hydraulik ensures that cybersecurity requirements are integrated into its development processes in a structured and traceable manner.

“This creates a solid foundation for collaboration with OEMs and system integrators, especially in regulated markets. At the same time, we are consistently refining our processes to meet the growing demands of connected vehicle and machine architectures,” he concludes.
