Chile's Codelco fires eight amid probe into over-reported output
Chile's State-owned miner Codelco said on Thursday it had dismissed eight people, including executives, amid its investigation into over-reported copper production in 2024 and 2025.
Those dismissed include managers at its Chuquicamata, Ministro Hales and Salvador divisions, as well as staff at Codelco's corporate headquarters, the company said in a statement.
It added in a separate statement that Felipe Lagno will take over as general manager at the Salvador division, replacing Patricio Viveros in one of the roles that was terminated.
Salvador's smelter operations superintendent was also removed, as were the mineral resources and development managers at each of the three mine divisions and at Codelco's corporate offices. The head of quality and metallurgical balance at Ministro Hales was dismissed as well, as was the head of metallurgical valuation, a position in the corporate accounting department.
Codelco, one of the world's largest copper producers, had previously fired an executive and took disciplinary action against others following an audit into improper reporting of production involving the Chuquicamata and Ministro Hales mines.
The company earlier this month said its 2024-2025 production figures appeared to contain artificially inflated output from the Ministro Hales and Salvador divisions, potentially because both mines had claimed the same production.
The company has been grappling to lift output from a slump in 2022 and 2023 when production fell to two-decade lows.
