Privately owned Lanseria International Airport has experienced significant growth over the past five years and will, this year, see the implementation of a series of development projects, including the construction of a new runway at a cost of R150-million, to improve the airport’s capacity.
Lanseria airport manager Gavin Sayce says the new 45-m-wide and 3-km-long runway, on which construction will start in the second quarter of this year, will enhance airport operations and increase efficiencies.
Another expansion project is the extension of the airport’s domestic departure lounge, with a new 200-m-long pier to accommodate increasing passenger numbers.
“We have had an exponential increase in passenger numbers and airline schedules during the last few years. Today, the airport hosts close to 1.5-million passengers a year,” says Sayce.
He adds that the airport, which started off with one passenger lounge, now features five lounges and departure gates.
Further, the construction of a multistorey parkade, close to the main terminal building, is under consideration.
Lanseria’s car park has been extended on a number of occasions to cater for the growing demand, which started with the Fifa World Cup in 2010, and again in 2011 to accommodate the continuous growth in passenger numbers.
In addition, Lanseria recently completed the commissioning of a common use self-service kiosk check-in system to speed up the check-in process. “With the increase in passenger numbers, manual check-ins are becoming time consuming and the new automated systems will make the whole check-in process a lot more user friendly and convenient,” says Sayce.
Six years ago, domestic airline Kulula started at Lanseria Airport with a daily return flight to Cape Town, which was extended to include Durban. In July 2011, Mango also introduced a scheduled service to serve Cape Town.
“On March 5, Lanseria’s management welcomed 1time’s operation to the rapidly growing second aviation hub of Gauteng. 1time is now the third domestic airline to take advantage of the airport’s convenient location and user-friendly operation.
“We have grown significantly in terms of the domestic market and our next area of growth is the regional market,” states Sayce.
