World Trade Organisation

The World Trade Organisation is the global international organisation that regulates and facilitates international trade between nations. Established on 1 January 1995, it replaced the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which had governed world trade since 1948. The organisation is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and has 164 member countries as of 2024, representing more than 98% of global trade. The WTO's primary functions include administering trade agreements, serving as a forum for trade negotiations, settling trade disputes between members, monitoring national trade policies and providing technical assistance and training for developing countries. Its overarching goal is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible by reducing barriers such as tariffs, quotas and discriminatory practices. The organisation operates on a consensus-based decision-making system, with each member having one vote regardless of economic size. The WTO's dispute settlement mechanism is one of its most important features, providing a rules-based system for resolving trade conflicts and preventing unilateral retaliation. Major rounds of multilateral trade negotiations have shaped global commerce, including the Uruguay Round that created the WTO and the ongoing Doha Development Round. The organisation has faced criticism from various quarters, with some arguing it favours developed nations while others contend it undermines national sovereignty, yet it remains the principal institutional framework governing international trade relations.
