Witwatersrand

The Witwatersrand is a 56-kilometre-long, north-facing escarpment in South Africa that extends from Johannesburg eastward to Nigel and westward to Krugersdorp. The ridge, whose name means "ridge of white waters" in Afrikaans, rises to elevations of 1 500 to 1 800 metres above sea level and forms the watershed between the Vaal and Limpopo river systems. The Witwatersrand is most significant for the Witwatersrand Basin, a geological formation that contains the world's largest known gold reserves and has produced more gold than any other mining district in history. Gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand in 1886, triggering a gold rush that led to the founding of Johannesburg and transformed South Africa's economy. The basin's gold-bearing conglomerate reefs, particularly the Main Reef and South Reef, extend over an area of approximately 350 kilometres by 200 kilometres, though economically viable deposits are concentrated in a narrower zone. Mining operations on the Witwatersrand have reached depths exceeding 3 500 metres, making them among the deepest hard-rock mines in the world. The region also contains significant deposits of uranium, which is extracted as a by-product of gold mining. Major mining companies including Sibanye-Stillwater, AngloGold Ashanti and Harmony Gold operate mines across the Witwatersrand goldfields. The Witwatersrand's gold production has declined from its peak in the 1970s, but the basin remains central to South Africa's mining industry and economic history. The escarpment and its surrounding urban sprawl now form the economic heartland of Gauteng province, home to Johannesburg and Pretoria.
