Water Management

Water management is the sector concerned with the planning, development, distribution and optimal use of water resources. The field encompasses the collection, treatment, storage and delivery of potable water, as well as the management of wastewater, stormwater and industrial effluent. Water management activities include infrastructure design and maintenance, demand forecasting, quality monitoring, conservation programmes and regulatory compliance. The sector serves municipal, agricultural, industrial and mining clients, with particular emphasis on ensuring reliable supply in water-scarce regions. Key challenges include ageing infrastructure, non-revenue water losses through leaks and theft, climate variability and the need for integrated catchment planning. Water management is critical to public health, economic development and environmental sustainability. In sub-Saharan Africa, the sector faces significant investment gaps, with many municipalities struggling to maintain reticulation networks and treatment works. Technologies such as smart metering, leak detection systems and decentralised treatment are increasingly deployed to improve efficiency. The industry includes consulting engineers, equipment suppliers, contractors and utility operators, supported by regulatory frameworks that govern water quality standards and tariff structures.
