Victoria

Victoria is a state in south-eastern Australia, with its capital in Melbourne. The state has a population of about 6.5-million people, making it the second-most populous state in the country. Victoria's economy is highly diversified, with strengths in finance, manufacturing, agriculture, education and mining. Melbourne serves as Australia's financial and commercial hub, while regional Victoria supports significant agricultural production, including dairy, grain and livestock. The state's mining sector is anchored by gold production, with the Bendigo and Ballarat goldfields having historical significance and the Fosterville mine representing one of the world's highest-grade gold operations. Victoria also produces brown coal from the Latrobe Valley, which has historically supplied much of the state's electricity generation. The state government operates from Melbourne, with a parliamentary system under the Australian federal structure. Victoria's compact geography and well-developed infrastructure have supported its role as an economic powerhouse, contributing roughly a quarter of Australia's gross domestic product. The state was established as a separate colony in 1851, during the height of the Australian gold rush, which drove rapid population growth and economic development.
