US Department Of Energy

The US Department of Energy is a Cabinet-level department of the United States federal government responsible for policies regarding energy production, energy security, nuclear weapons and nuclear reactor technology. Established in 1977, the department consolidated federal energy functions previously scattered across multiple agencies in response to the 1970s energy crisis. Its mandate spans a broad portfolio including the development and commercialisation of energy technologies, oversight of the national nuclear weapons stockpile, environmental cleanup of the nuclear weapons complex, and energy-related research and development. The department operates a network of 17 national laboratories, including facilities such as Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore and Oak Ridge, which conduct fundamental and applied research in fields ranging from particle physics to materials science. It plays a central role in advancing critical minerals supply chains, renewable energy deployment and grid modernisation. The department also administers loan guarantee programmes and grant funding to support emerging energy technologies and strategic industries. Its Office of Science is the largest single funder of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States. The department's work on critical minerals includes research into extraction, processing and recycling technologies for rare earth elements and other materials essential to clean energy and national security. It is headquartered in Washington, DC, and employs more than 14 000 federal staff alongside over 90 000 contractor employees across its laboratory and production complex.
