US Department Of Defence

The US Department of Defense (United States Department of Defense) is the executive branch agency responsible for coordinating and supervising all functions and agencies directly related to national security and the US armed forces. Headquartered at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, the department is led by the Secretary of Defense, a civilian appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, who exercises authority over the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Space Force. The Department of Defense is the largest employer in the world, with about three-million military and civilian personnel, and operates with an annual budget exceeding $800-billion. Its mandate encompasses military operations, defence policy, weapons development, intelligence, cybersecurity and the protection of US interests globally. The department oversees a vast network of military bases, research facilities and contractors, and plays a central role in shaping US foreign policy and international security arrangements through alliances such as NATO. In recent years the Department of Defense has prioritised securing supply chains for critical minerals and materials essential to advanced weapons systems, semiconductors, batteries and other defence technologies, seeking to reduce reliance on adversarial nations, particularly China. The department administers programmes such as the Defense Production Act to support domestic mining, processing and manufacturing of strategic materials including rare earths, tungsten, lithium and graphite. The US Department of Defense was established in 1947 through the National Security Act, consolidating the former War Department and Navy Department under unified civilian control.
