University Of South Africa

The University of South Africa (Unisa) is a public distance-learning university based in Pretoria, South Africa. It is the largest university on the African continent by enrolment, serving hundreds of thousands of students through correspondence and online education. Unisa offers undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications across a wide range of disciplines, including humanities, law, business, science, engineering and education. The institution operates through a network of regional centres and learning hubs across South Africa and in several other African countries, providing support services and examination facilities to its geographically dispersed student body. As a comprehensive open-distance-learning institution, Unisa plays a significant role in widening access to higher education for working adults, rural learners and students who cannot attend traditional contact universities. The university is a member of the South African Research Chairs Initiative and hosts numerous research chairs funded by the National Research Foundation, contributing to scholarship in fields such as sociology, development studies and applied sciences. Unisa's academic staff include prominent researchers and public intellectuals who shape policy debates and contribute to knowledge production in South Africa and beyond. The university was established in 1873 as the University of the Cape of Good Hope, became the University of South Africa in 1916, and adopted its current distance-learning model in 1946, making it one of the world's oldest dedicated distance-education institutions.
