Transnet Pipelines

Transnet Pipelines is a division of Transnet SOC Ltd, the South African state-owned freight logistics company. The division operates and maintains the country's network of petroleum product pipelines, transporting refined fuels from coastal refineries and import terminals to inland depots and distribution hubs. Its infrastructure includes the main Durban–Johannesburg pipeline, which carries petrol, diesel and jet fuel across approximately 550 km, as well as branch lines serving key industrial and commercial centres. Transnet Pipelines plays a critical role in South Africa's liquid-fuel supply chain, ensuring the efficient movement of energy products to meet domestic demand. The division is responsible for pipeline integrity, safety management and capacity planning, working closely with oil companies and other stakeholders. It also manages storage facilities at strategic nodes along the pipeline network. Transnet Pipelines operates under the regulatory framework of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa and is subject to tariff approvals for its services. The division has faced operational challenges in recent years, including maintenance backlogs and the need for infrastructure upgrades to support energy security. It remains a key component of Transnet's broader portfolio, which includes rail, ports and freight-rail operations.
