Transnet National Ports Authority

Transnet National Ports Authority is the South African state-owned entity responsible for the safe, effective and efficient economic functioning of the national port system. It operates as a division of Transnet SOC Ltd, the country's state-owned freight transport and logistics company. The authority manages and controls eight commercial seaports: Durban, Richards Bay, Saldanha Bay, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), East London, Mossel Bay and Ngqura. Its mandate includes port infrastructure development, maintenance of navigation channels and berths, marine services, and the regulation of port operations. The authority is also responsible for granting licences and leases to terminal operators and service providers within the port system. It derives revenue from port tariffs, property leases and marine service charges. Transnet National Ports Authority plays a central role in South Africa's trade economy, as the ports handle the majority of the country's seaborne imports and exports. The organisation oversees compliance with the National Ports Act and ensures adherence to international maritime standards and safety protocols. It was established in 2006 following the corporatisation of the former South African Port Operations, which separated port authority functions from terminal operating activities.
