Technology Innovation Agency

The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) is a South African public entity established to support the development and commercialisation of competitive technology-based products and services. Operating under the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, TIA's mandate is to stimulate and intensify technological innovation in order to improve economic growth and the quality of life of South Africans. The agency provides funding, business support and infrastructure to researchers, entrepreneurs and small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) working to bring innovative technologies to market. TIA focuses on sectors including health, agriculture, mining, energy, advanced manufacturing and information and communication technologies. It operates through various programmes, including the Innovation Bridge, which supports early-stage technology ventures, and partnerships with innovation hubs such as the Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct and The Innovation Hub. The agency works closely with research institutions such as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and universities to facilitate technology transfer and commercialisation. TIA also collaborates with other government departments, including the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, to align innovation support with national development priorities. The agency plays a key role in South Africa's innovation ecosystem, helping to de-risk technology ventures and connect innovators with investors, industry partners and markets. TIA was established in 2008 through the Technology Innovation Agency Act to consolidate and streamline government support for technology innovation.
